Boost Your Recovery with Quality Sleep

Guide to better rapid recovery how to have better sleep nutrition hydration

Recovery is the time after training when we allow our bodies to repair. Hydration, proper nutrition, stretching, and supplementation – we know the key to achieving our fitness goals rely on these recovery habits. We also need to sleep! Sleep is equally important for athletic performance as training and nutrition. Without quality sleep, the body does not have the time it needs to repair. Recovery time is not only for muscles but for the body as a whole. Our body’s hormonal, neurological and structural systems all need recovery time.

A lack of quality sleep is linked to increased fatigue and lowered concentration and energy. As a result, you’ll feel less motivated to maximize your workout.

What Is Quality Sleep?

During sleep, while our bodies rest and recharge, we cycle between two main types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (Non-REM). Good quality sleep is characterized by how well we cycle through each REM and Non-REM cycle. Within Non-REM, there are four stages of sleep:

  • Stage 1 Non-REM: light sleep
  • Stage 2 Non-REM: disengagement from surroundings
  • Stage 3 & 4 Non-REM: Slow Wave Sleep

The 3rd and 4th stages are the deepest, most restorative stages of sleep. Muscles are relaxed, blood pressure drops and breathing is slow. Slow Wave Sleep allows the body to focus its resources on revitalizing energy stores, regenerating tissues, building bones, repairing muscles, producing hormones, reducing cortisol and strengthening the immune system. As an athlete, you can see why deep sleep is important!

We talk a lot about the benefits of amino acids (in particularly BCAAs) for active performance and post-activity recovery. But did you know there are other amino acids that are particularly beneficial for helping you get your most restful sleep? Amino VITAL’s parent company, Ajinomoto Health & Nutrition, makes another plant-based amino acid supplement called Glysom – a natural sleep aid proven to promote good quality sleep.

Introducing Glysom For Better Sleep

Glysom contains glycine, an amino acid that naturally occurs in the body and can be found in many of the proteins we eat. As a supplement, glycine is effective in promoting deep sleep – the non-REM, Slow Wave Sleep crucial to feeling refreshed and restored in the morning.

When ingested, glycine crosses the blood-brain barrier and binds to the Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Located in the hypothalamus at the base of the brain, the SCN is the master circadian center and regulates sleep cycles. Glycine lowers core body temperature which has been seen to reduce fragmentation of sleep and promote longer periods in Slow Wave Sleep.

Glysom is unique in it doesn’t induce sleep but helps you stay asleep to reach the deeper stages. Additionally, it is safe and effective with no associated morning drowsiness which makes it a great option for the restless sleeper. It also works well with Amino VITAL’s Rapid Recovery, which reduces soreness and fatigue, to support you in recovery time.

Get your sleep then go crush your workout!
