Recovery: the time after training when we allow our bodies to repair. What is quality sleep? During sleep, while our bodies rest and recharge, we cycle between two main types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (Non-REM). Good quality sleep is characterized by how well we cycle through each REM and Non-REM cycle. Within Non-REM, there are four stages of sleep:

 

Stage 1 Non-REM: light sleep

 

Stage 2 Non-REM: disengagement from surroundings

 

Stage 3 & 4 Non-REM: Slow Wave Sleep

 

Stages 3&4 are the deepest, most restorative stages of sleep. Muscles are relaxed, blood pressure drops and breathing is slow.
