Staying Fit During The Holidays

There is no doubt that many worry about gaining weight during the holiday season. Between the trays of cookies and sweets, and the temptation to stay cozy on the couch, how can you stay fit?

The average weight gain during the holidays is just 1 pound.

Stop thinking about weight and food. Easier said than done, right? Instead of stressing over counting calories, start focusing on what the holidays are really about. Focus on family, friends, and giving to those in need. There are so many things to think about and do this time of year that worrying about weight gain should not be your primary focus.

There are many ways to stay active with holiday-related activities.

Decorating your home can be an active and exhausting task. Whether you move decorations up and down stairs or out of a closet, you are still getting a workout. About 1 hour of decorating can burn around 250 calories.

The average 7.5 foot Christmas trees weighs 70 pounds.

Shopping for loved ones is another great way to stay on your feet and stay active. Next time you go shopping at the mall, bring a Fitbit or step counter. After your shopping adventure is complete, check to see how far you walked!

Another fun and festive activity is ice skating. Ice skating activates small stabilizing muscles that we do not usually use. Not only is the lower body fully engaged, but the core is also. If you don’t ice skate regularly, you will most likely feel sore the day after, and it’s not just from falling.

What do you do if you’re still worried?

If you need to, track what you eat. Keeping a tally of what you put in your body can make you more accountable, even during holiday feasts. You can also track your workouts to keep you moving toward your goals.

Sometimes you just want to kick back and relax during the holidays, but staying away junk food is not the easiest task. The holidays only come once a year, so it is okay to indulge in moderation.  If you are planning on eating those sweets, try riding a stationary bike and/or running at least twice a week. This is a good way to give your body rest while staying in decent shape.

When up to you, make healthier versions of your favorite desserts so you can indulge guilt-free. Sometimes, however, it is out of your control. Another way to stay in shape is to get a good workout in before heading to that holiday party. Make sure those treats are worth it and eat them slowly! Eating slowly lessens the chances that you will over-indulge.

You don’t have to give up on eating healthy during the holidays, but be careful not to obsess over it. Remember what Christmas is all about and spend time with the ones you love!
