Twenty-two-year-old Team Amino Vital athlete Nick Schmitt started riding dirt bikes at the age of three. At seven, he qualified for the Loretta Lynn Amateur Motocross Nationals (now known as the Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship), but it wasn’t until 2013 that Nick got the itch to try road racing after attending the AMA Daytona 200 in Daytona Beach, Florida. In July – midway through the race season – Nick purchased a Suzuki SV650 race bike. He attended Aaron Stevenson’s Cornerspeed road racing class to learn the fundamental differences between street riding and track racing and registered for his first race the following month.
In August – competing in his first weekend of organized road racing – Nick scored three second-place finishes, earning his WERA expert license. The following month, he achieved a third-place finish in the AMA Road Racing Grand Championships, racing against the best amateur riders in the country. Though Nick only contested half a season’s races, he finished 2013 in the top five in four of the seven classes in which he entered.
In 2014, Nick will compete as a Novice for one more season to gain valuable experience before moving to the Expert class. He plans to compete in regional and national events along the east coast from New Jersey to Alabama to build his confidence, experience and knowledge of road racing and – of course – to win as many races as possible in an attempt to earn regional and national championships in the CCS, WERA and AMA racing organizations.
